MOUNTAINEERS vs ROCHELLE

I was really pleased with the effort in Friday's game against Rochelle. I was a little worried before the game about taking care of the ball because of the rain and saturated field, but we handled the ball well and kept it secured. I was really pleased with our defensive performance. Number 10, Rance Railsback, did a fantastic job getting pressure up the middle and even caused and recovered a couple fumbles. Number 4 Jayton Perry took care of business sealing the outside and he had some good hits in the game. Alex Crowder, number 2, had an interception at the beginning of the game that got the team fired up and, other than the lightning delay, we didn't let off the gas until the game was over.

Offensively we performed well. I would have liked to see a better job blocking in tight formations but overall we ran the ball effectively. Rochelle had a hard time keeping up with our 4 running backs, number 2 Alex Crowder, number 13 Cody Robertson, number 1 Trevor Evens, and Number 5 Jaxson Diggs. We rotated our backs to keep them fresh and our backfield responded wanting to take advantage of every opportunity to carry the ball. Number 4 Jayton Perry also caught a few passes to keep some drives going including a nice touchdown grab.

HOMECOMING: MOUNTAINEERS vs BLANKET

We had a tough game Friday night against 11th ranked Blanket. Blanket is big, tall and quick. They are also skilled and well coached at their positions. Defensively we had a lot of trouble stopping Blanket's high-powered offense. We would make good plays on 1st and 2nd down and then let them slip behind us for a big pass down the field. Our zone rotations couldn't rotate fast enough to cover the deep threats. Also, our front line didn't get enough pressure on the spread back throwing the ball because of his scramble ability.

Offensively at times we looked good. We weren't getting a lot of big plays down the field but we were moving the ball effectively getting a few first downs before drives would stall and we would lose possession on downs. We did do a better job taking care of the football and not having the bad snaps that have plagued us in the past.

Our two touchdowns came from heads up plays on both offense and defense. Number 2, Alex Crowder ran a sweep left option pass throwing the ball to number 4, Jayton Perry, who tipped the ball in the air. Number 11, Cesar Padilla was in the right place at the right time to catch the tip taking the ball in for the first Santa Anna score. This play also made top play nominee on ABC KTXS Week Six Top Play of the Week. Our second touchdown came on defense when the Blanket spreadback was being tackled and tried to throw a pass. Our defense knocked the ball from his hand causing a fumble and number 10, Rance Railsback scooped up the ball and ran it in for a touchdown.

As a team, I felt we played the entire game. We never gave up and even though the emotions of playing on homecoming night, we stayed focused on trying to score and stopping Blanket. I was proud of the effort I saw from them.
