The McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act is federal legislation that ensures educational rights and provides support for children and youth experiencing homelessness, including rights to immediate enrollment, transportation, and staying in their school of origin. The Act defines homeless children as those lacking a fixed, regular, and adequate nighttime residence and mandates that schools provide them with immediate enrollment, even without necessary documents, and assist in acquiring them. It also includes provisions for funding programs to assist homeless students and requires states and districts to appoint liaisons to facilitate these services.
